Natural Pest Protection

Today I came across an article all about Cockroaches moving into peoples homes in the summer. This was due to a few factors, primarily the heat and lack of moisture in the ground and mulch around the home. I am pleased to let you know that Cypress mulch can naturally deter Cockroaches as well as termites. An added benefit in purchasing a quality manufactured local product.

The article went on to say that watering your garden is another option to keep their habitat moist and avoid them looking to nest in a more moisture friendly environment like your bathroom. With water restrictions and empty water tanks around this time of year the use of a Cypress mulch may be another suitable solution. Not only will Cypress mulch look great, smell amazing, retain moisture, last longer but it will deter those unwanted pests as well.

Happy gardening.

7  Steps to Selecting the Perfect Mulch

10/11/2014

1. Location location location where is the mulch to be used? e.g. flat garden beds, windswept area, steep slopes or a combination.

2. How are you going to apply it to the garden? e.g. by hand, wheel barrow, shovel, pitch fork, bobcat. Chip and Mulch is easy to shovel and move about, where as bark generally requires a pitch fork as it binds together and is better for steep embankments and wind swept areas.

3. Work out the colour that would compliment your garden, gold, orange, chocolate brown, deep brown/red,Uluru Red this is a personal preference.

4. Work out how fine or course/chunky you want the mulch to be.

5. How long you want it to last (Cypress will last longer and retain its colour longer than other mulches).

6. How much do you need? Calculate the length x width x depth. Generally we say a minimum of 10cm or 4 inches deep. The deeper the better for weed suppression.

7. Now visit your favorite local Landscape Yard or call us to find one in your area and look at the products that meet your requirements to Refresh Your Garden. Remember to always look for fresh quality product and if you want Cypress look for our Termite Resistant logo on the landscape bins to guarantee you get 100% Cypress.

Happy gardening,

Why Should I Mulch My Garden?

10/11/2014

Mulch is generally added to a garden over the top of a good quality soil to retain moisture, add colour, reduce weed growth and to regulate the soil temperature.  All of these features assist in allowing your plants to grow faster and healthier.

Cypress is an ideal mulch for your garden as it meets all of these criteria but also offers a couple of extra benefits. Namely the Fresh Cypress Fragrance and it has a Natural Termite Resistance.

When buying your Cypress mulch always ask your landscaper if it is 100% Cypress and accept no imitations. There are many options available these days but ensure the company you purchase from stands by their product. These are simple questions and if your supplier can not answer these confidently then I would purchase my mulch elsewhere.

Refresh your garden.

How to Apply Your Mulch

Applying your Mulch

When applying your mulch always be generous and apply evenly. Generally we recommend the mulch be aplied at 4 inches (100mm) thick all over your garden bed. Remember to leave a small area around the plant stem to ensure water can penetrate the mulch and get down into the soil.

After 3 to 6 months it is good to turn your mulch with a garden fork or shovel.  This will extend its life and add a new colour to your garden as the mulch underneath will be fresh and moist looking like new.

If you are topping up your garden with new mulch I would recommend applying it at a thickness of 1 to 2 inches (25mm - 50mm) to avoid the old mulch showing when you turn the newer mulch.

Enjoy your gardening and the smell of a newly Cypress mulched garden.
